You don't have to be an expert- in fact some local guides who operate charter boats will actually guarantee you'll catch a trout! Skiing Lake Taupo Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields, the North Island's winter sports playgrounds, are just under two hours away to the south, as is the famed Tongariro Crossing, recently described as the best one day summer trek in New Zealand. Volcanic Lake Taupo Explore Taupo's volcanic heritage with a visit to the Volcanic activity Centre, the hidden valley at Orakei Korako and the new Wairakei Terraces.
